About First Parenting
1 Is First Parenting free?
Yes, all features of First Parenting (baby food calculator, vaccination scheduler, toy recommendations) are completely free. No sign-up required.
2 Is my data saved?
First Parenting does not store any personal information on servers. The birthdate or age information you enter is only saved in your browser (localStorage) for convenience on future visits. Clearing your browser data will remove it.
3 Is the baby food calculator accurate?
The baby food calculator provides approximate amounts based on standard ratios (10:1, 7:1, 5:1 porridge). Since every baby's appetite differs and ingredient moisture content varies, please use it as a reference only. It's best to adjust actual portions based on your baby's response.
4 Is the vaccination schedule accurate?
The vaccination scheduler calculates expected dates based on CDC recommended schedules. However, actual timing may vary depending on your baby's health condition, previous vaccination reactions, and vaccine type. Always consult with your pediatrician or vaccination center before vaccinating.
5 How are toy recommendations determined?
Toy recommendations are based on developmental psychology and infant development stages, suggesting appropriate toy types for each age. You can also filter by developmental areas such as sensory, motor, language, and cognitive skills. Since every baby develops at their own pace, please choose based on your baby's interests and temperament.
6 What happens if I buy through Amazon links?
The 'View on Amazon' links in toy recommendations are Amazon Associates links. If you purchase through these links, a percentage of the purchase amount is paid to us as commission. There's no additional cost to you, and this revenue helps support the operation of First Parenting.
7 Can I use it on mobile?
Yes, First Parenting is optimized for mobile web browsers. You can access it directly through Safari, Chrome, or other browsers on your smartphone. No app installation required.
8 Can I add vaccinations to my calendar?
Yes, click the 'Export to Calendar' button in the vaccination scheduler to download an .ics file. Import this file into iPhone Calendar, Google Calendar, Outlook, or other calendar apps to automatically add vaccination schedules.
9 Does this replace medical advice?
No, First Parenting is a convenience tool for reference only and does not replace medical consultation or professional nutrition advice. For important decisions regarding your baby's health, nutrition, and development, please always consult with a pediatrician or registered dietitian.

Development
1 Is it okay if my 1-year-old still hasn't walked?
Yes, that's normal. Anything up to 18 months is considered a normal range. Some babies crawl for a long time while others skip crawling and walk directly. If your baby can pull up to stand with support, development is progressing well.
2 Should I worry if my 1-year-old isn't talking yet?
It's normal if your baby hasn't said their first word by 12 months. As long as they babble, understand simple words, and use gestures like waving, language development is on track. However, if they don't respond to their name or babbling decreases, consult your pediatrician.
3 Do I need to stop breastfeeding or formula at 1 year old?
No, you don't need to change everything just because your baby turned one. You can gradually transition to cow's milk based on your baby's readiness. Consult your pediatrician before making changes.
4 Our baby seems to be developing slowly. Should I be worried?
Development milestones are averages, and there's naturally a wide range of normal. A 1-2 month difference is normal. If your baby is 2-3 months behind or losing previously gained skills, consult your pediatrician.
5 When should babies start rolling over?
Most babies start rolling around 3-5 months. They usually roll from stomach to back first, and back to stomach comes a bit later. Plenty of tummy time helps build the muscles needed.
6 When do babies typically start walking?
Most babies take their first steps between 12-15 months. Around 9 months they start pulling up to stand, 10-11 months they cruise along furniture, and around 12 months they try independent walking. If your baby isn't walking by 18 months, speak with your pediatrician.
7 When does babbling start?
Babies make cooing sounds (ah, oo) at 2-3 months, babble (baba, mama) at 4-6 months, and say meaningful first words at 9-12 months. By 12 months, expect 1-2 words; by 18 months, 10-20 words is average.
8 How many naps should a 1-year-old take?
Around their first birthday, babies typically take 1-2 naps for a total of 2-3 hours. During this time, some babies transition from 2 naps to 1 nap.
Baby Food & Feeding
1 My baby spits out food. Is this normal?
Yes, it's completely normal at first. Your baby needs time to adjust to the spoon and new tastes. Don't force feeding—just try again in a few days.
2 My baby's stool changed after starting solids. Should I be concerned?
When babies start eating solid foods, their digestive system adjusts and stool changes are normal. Make sure your baby is getting enough fluids. If it continues beyond 2-3 days, consult your pediatrician.
3 Is homemade baby food or store-bought better?
Both are fine. Homemade lets you choose ingredients, while store-bought is convenient and nutritionally balanced. Many parents use a combination depending on their situation.
4 My baby doesn't like lumps. What should I do?
Some babies reject sudden texture changes. Try adding tiny lumps to smooth food and gradually increase the texture. Let them get used to it slowly.
5 Can my baby eat soft rice without teeth?
Yes, babies can gum soft foods even without teeth. Baby gums are stronger than you might think. Just make sure food is cooked until it's very soft.
6 Do I need to feed my baby 3 meals a day?
Not necessarily. Your baby might only eat 2 meals some days depending on their mood. What matters is overall nutrition and growth pattern. Talk to your pediatrician if you're concerned.
7 What's the best first food for baby?
Infant rice cereal or rice porridge is most common. It's low in allergens and easy to digest, making it ideal for first solids.
8 How long should I wait between introducing new foods?
Wait 3-5 days between new foods so you can watch for allergic reactions.
9 When should I introduce common allergens?
Recent research suggests introducing allergenic foods early (after 6 months) in small amounts may actually help prevent allergies.
10 Will my baby outgrow their food allergies?
Allergies to eggs, milk, wheat, and soy often resolve naturally as children grow. However, allergies to peanuts, tree nuts, and shellfish tend to persist.
Play & Activities
1 When can babies start doing arts and crafts?
You can start simple art activities around 6 months. Begin with exploration and sensory play using safe materials that are okay if they go in their mouth.
2 What art materials are safe for babies?
Homemade options like yogurt paint, flour paint, and natural dyes (beet, spinach, turmeric) are safest. For commercial products, look for non-toxic labels and AP certified paints.
3 What if my baby doesn't like messy play?
Some babies dislike getting dirty. Try using tools like brushes or stamps, or try mess-free activities like ziplock bag painting. You could also use stickers or colored pencils instead. Never force it.
4 How does art play help baby development?
Art play develops creativity and imagination, fine motor skills, sensory awareness, cognitive abilities, emotional expression, and concentration.
5 When can babies start water play?
Bath play is okay once the umbilical cord falls off. Tub water play is good from 3 months. Baby swimming class is appropriate from 4-6 months. Public pools are fine from 6 months, and beach/river play from 12 months.
6 How does water play help baby development?
Water play develops sensory awareness, gross motor skills, fine motor control, understanding of cause and effect, and can improve sleep.
7 What's the most important water safety rule?
Never leave your baby alone near water. Even 5 cm of water in a bathtub can be dangerous. Don't take your eyes off your baby, even for a second.
8 When and how should I start baby swimming?
Baby swim classes usually start at 4-6 months once your baby can hold their head up and has had some vaccinations. Use swim diapers, baby swim clothes, and towels. Start with 10-15 minutes in water that's 30-32°C (86-90°F).
Health & Wellness
1 How long does a baby cold usually last?
A typical cold lasts 7-10 days. Runny nose that starts clear, becomes yellow or green, then clears again is a normal pattern.
2 Should I give my baby cold medicine?
There's no medicine to cure a cold itself. Cold medicine only relieves symptoms and isn't recommended for babies under 6 years. If your baby has a fever, use fever reducer only.
3 When should I take my baby to the doctor for a cold?
See a doctor if your baby is under 3 months with any fever, has fever above 38°C for 3+ days, has trouble breathing, refuses to eat, shows signs of dehydration, or if symptoms last over 10 days.
4 When do baby colic symptoms usually go away?
Most babies outgrow colic by 3-4 months naturally. It usually starts around 2-3 weeks, peaks at 6 weeks, and sometimes stops suddenly. There are no long-term effects.
5 How can I soothe baby colic?
The 5 S's are very effective: Swaddling, Side (hold baby on their side), Shushing (make shh sounds), Swinging, and Sucking (pacifier). Belly massage, white noise, and warm baths also help.
6 Is my baby just constipated?
Breastfed babies can be normal going just once every 1-2 weeks. What matters is the stool consistency, not frequency. If stools are soft and your baby seems comfortable, it's not constipation.
7 What foods help baby constipation?
Prunes, pears, apples (with skin), sweet potatoes, oatmeal, and broccoli are high in fiber and help. Bananas and rice can make stools harder, so avoid them during constipation.
8 How do I massage my baby's belly for constipation?
Gently massage your baby's belly in clockwise circles around the belly button. Bicycle leg movements are also effective. Do this 5-10 minutes, ideally 30 minutes after feeding.
9 What are the main signs of ear infection in babies?
Signs include pulling or tugging at the ear, fever, increased fussiness, refusing to eat, sleep problems, and discharge from the ear.
10 At what temperature does my baby have a fever?
Generally, 37.5°C or higher is considered low fever, 38°C or higher is fever, and 39°C or higher is high fever. Measurement method can affect these numbers slightly.
Sleep & Routines
1 When should I start a baby routine?
You can start a light routine from birth. A structured schedule works best starting around 3-4 months when your baby's sleep patterns become more predictable.
2 Why is a baby routine important?
Regular routines give babies a sense of security and improve sleep quality. For parents, predictable schedules help manage energy and provide personal time.
3 What if we can't stick to the routine?
That's okay. When travel, illness, or outings disrupt the routine, just start again the next day. Maintaining about 70-80% consistency is sufficient.
4 What is the E.A.S.Y. routine?
E.A.S.Y. stands for Eat → Activity → Sleep → Your time. This sequence separates feeding from sleep, preventing babies from falling asleep at the breast or bottle.
